Churchill and Direct Line have become the first insurers to resume cover for cancelled trips due to Covid-19. The move comes after the government lifted its ban on non-essential travel to a number of countries, including Spain, France, and Greece.
However, customers will only be covered if they bought their policy before the pandemic started.
Direct Line said it would also offer cover for new customers from Monday, but warned that claims relating to Covid-19 would not be paid out unless the policyholder had specifically chosen to add pandemic cover.
Churchill travel insurance will protect you in the event that your trip is cancelled due to Covid-19. This cover is available for new and existing customers. Claims relating to Covid-19 will only be paid out if you have specifically chosen to add a pandemic cover to your policy.
However, they have now resumed selling policies that include cover for Covid-19, with Direct Line offering an option to add it on to existing policies for an additional premium.
- Churchill’s head of travel insurance, Simon Williams, said: “We know how important it is for people to be able to plan their summer holidays with confidence.”
- “That’s why we’re pleased to be able to offer customers the option to add cover for Covid-19 to their travel insurance.”
- Direct Line said it would provide cover for “reasonable and necessary” expenses incurred if a trip has to be cancelled due to Covid, such as accommodation and travel costs.
The insurer added that it would also cover customers who have to cancel their trips due to being diagnosed with Covid, or having to self-isolate.
